Artists

The work of designers such as Yohji Yamamto has really inspired me, I started using origami techniques in my work, folding and playing around with the overall shape. I have been especially interested by Japanese design, after seeing an exhibition at the Barbican, Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion, I like the unique style and how artistic the pieces were, the cross over of modern and traditional techniques. I am also interested in the comparison of British designer Vivienne Westwood, I like her use of draping. Her classic style crossed with a punk edge appealed to me, which I don’t feel other designers do well. I am very interested by the intertwining of cultural influences in garments, like Yinka Shonibare’s use of challenging colonialism and mixes both African and European design in his pieces.

Galleries

I try to attend as many events as I can, e.g. the fashion in motion Peter Jensen show at the V&A, I really enjoyed his fun, colourful I found his inspiration very unique, using female figures that he finds interesting as the basis for his collecetions.

Work Experience

My work experience placement increased my enthusiasm to pursue a career in Fashion. I found my own placement working with one of the pattern cutters the designer Mary Katranzou, based in London. Working as a runner, preparing for production in July 2009, I learnt pattern cutting techniques, draping, how to use an industrial sewing machine. I also undertook a jewellery project for Vogue with the designer. Working with her broadened my understanding of how a collection is produced, and I gained an insight into the practical skills in clothing and pattern cutting. I really enjoyed the responsibility and commitment.
