Clare In The Community - Portfolio

Clare Allen spent ten years in the mental health care system and subsequently wrote the novel Poppy Shakespeare, based on her experiences. In 2008, Poppy Shakespeare was adapted for film. The imagery used in the novel serves as the basis for my project; Clare in the Community. Having read the novel, I felt compelled to investigate the issues surrounding mental health further and learn more about the author and her experiences. Through imagery and text, I have explored current issues within the mental health care system including prejudice, stigma, the role of the mental healthcare system and patients satisfaction with the care they receive; past, present and in the future. I often attempted to mirror Clare Allen's style of writing but in visual format, using humour in order to deal with controversial and harrowing themes.
